McDonalds wants to return to Russia
The filings come more than two years after McDonald’s exited Russia in May 2022 amid sanctions imposed by the U.S. following the escalation of the Ukraine conflict. The company sold its operations to Russian businessman Aleksander Govor, who rebranded the restaurants as Vkusno i Tochka (“Just Tasty”), now operating over 880 outlets across 64 regions. The sale agreement included a clause allowing McDonald’s to repurchase the business within 15 years.
According to Russian media, the fast-food giant filed more than 50 trademark requests at the end of 2024 and submitted documentation confirming compliance with Russian regulations. Experts believe these applications may be a strategic move to maintain control over the brand in Russia, as unused trademarks can be revoked after three years. Since McDonald’s suspended operations in March 2022, the deadline to preserve its trademarks is approaching.
The company has yet to make any public comments on the matter.
Meanwhile, Russian officials have highlighted the continued presence of some U.S. businesses in the country. In March, President Vladimir Putin’s investment envoy, Kirill Dmitriev, said around 150 American firms still operate in Russia, and claimed that U.S. businesses lost over $300 billion by exiting the market.
Robert Agee, President of the American Chamber of Commerce, has urged the U.S. to ease sanctions, citing negative effects on both American and Russian economies. He also welcomed renewed diplomatic talks under President Donald Trump.
Last month, Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff hinted that American companies might consider returning to Russia if a peace deal over Ukraine is reached.
