Greek MEP gets expelled from EP group over journalist assault

(MENAFN) Greece’s main opposition party, the Coalition of the Radical Left (SYRIZA), announced on Wednesday that it had expelled Member of the European Parliament (MEP) Nikos Pappas from its European Parliament group after he assaulted a journalist.

“SYRIZA President Sokratis Famellos has removed SYRIZA MEP Nikos Pappas from the party’s EP group due to his unacceptable conduct,” the party said in a statement.

The party also confirmed that disciplinary proceedings have been launched to consider expelling Pappas from SYRIZA entirely.

Pappas acknowledged in remarks reported by Greek media that he physically assaulted a journalist in Strasbourg and expressed regret for his actions.
